Cirri arise from the ventral side and the adoral zone of membranelles circle the anterior end of the cell and curve ventrally along one side of the oral cavity. The AZM is composed of triplet rows of cilia in the anterior end of the cell. Cirri are composed of 8 or 9 rows of tightly packed cilia. The cell uses these cirri to crawl over the substrate. TEM taken on 7/24/67 by R. Allen with Philips 200 operating at 60kV. Neg. 1,370X. Bar = 5?m. Standard glutaraldehyde fixation followed by osmium tetroxide, dehydrated in alcohol, and embedded in an epoxy resin. Microtome sections prepared at approximately 75nm thickness. The negative was scanned and processed in Photoshop. This image is best used for qualitative analysis. A high resolution negative is in the library at (CIL:38872) and can be used for qualitative analysis. Additional information is available at (http://www5.pbrc.hawaii.edu/allen/).
