Planar view of the cortex demonstrating that the striated bands do indeed link the internal slopes of one cortical unit with all surrounding units. Parasomal sacs lie to the side of a single basal body or a basal body pair and have a short extension of the alveolar septum that passes around them. Trichocyst tips penetrate into the lateral ridges and kinetodesmal fibers run within the longitudinal ridges. TEM taken on 2/29/80 by R. Allen with Hitachi HU11A operating at 75kV. Neg. 8,500X. Bar = 1?m.

Standard glutaraldehyde fixation followed by osmium tetroxide, dehydrated in alcohol and embedded in an epoxy resin. Microtome sections prepared at approximately 75nm thickness. The negative was printed to paper and the image was scanned to Photoshop. This digitized image is available for qualitative analysis.
