Cross sections of a pair of basal bodies showing the triplet makeup of the 9 fibers; only one microtubular fiber is complete in each triplet while the other two microtubular fibers share some subunits with their neighbors. TEM taken on 2/3/69 by R. Allen with Philips 300 operating at 60kV. Neg. 47,100X.
Biological Process: Microtubule basal body organization, Microtubule cytoskeleton organization
Standard glutaraldehyde fixation followed by osmium tetroxide, dehydrated in alcohol and embedded in an epoxy resin. Microtome sections prepared at approximately 75nm thickness. The raw negative was scanned with an Epson Perfection V750 Pro and this high resolution image is best used for quantitative analysis.
