Hidradenitis suppurativa – no pilonidal sinus
Hidradenitis suppurativa is a recurring and usually chronic skin disease with formation of very painful inflammations, abscesses and fistulas.
Usually this disease does not occur until puberty or early adulthood. In the literature an early onset of the disease is only described in 2-5% of the cases. After menopause an onset of the disease is also not to be expected. Please note: According to recent views the term and the disease concept of “Hidradenitis suppurativa” are misleading because the disease does not emanate from the sweat glands but originates from the sebaceous glands and the terminal hair follicles. The inflammation of the sweat glands occurs secondarily. Accordingly, the term acne inversa should be used.
