The most common causes are dermatophytes, mainly Tinea unguium. This species also causes the athlete´s foot. Other causes are Epidermophyton floccosum, Tinea rubrum or Tinea mentagrophytes. Rare causes are candida species and mould fungus.
Sources of infection are usually public swimming pools, showers and changing rooms.
