The cerebrum or telencephalon is the largest part of the human brain and central nervous system. It's responsible for lots of thoughts and actions that differentiate humans from other creatures.
The cerebrum is located between the cranial roof and (caudal) the anterior and middle cranial fossa. It is seperated into two hemispheres by the interhemispheric fissure. Each hemisphere can be subdivided into four lobes, according to the cranial bones that cover them:
The surface of the brain is very sulcate, which increases its surface. Some of these Sulci and Gyri are the most imortant: The central sulcus, between frontal and parietal lobe, and the lateral sulcus, between frontal / parietal and temporal lobe.
According to present knowledge, the brain of vertebrates is terminally evolved, because it processes sensory impressions in a highly centralized manner, and coordinates complex behavioral patterns. It processes all the vital informations of an organism. Apart from vertebrates, some invertebrate animals, e.g. squids, also have a highly complex brain that enable them to perform purposeful tasks. Thus, the central point of the nervous system of some invertebrate animals, e.g. annelid worms or insects, is also called a brain, either speaking of a cerebral ganglion, supraesophageal ganglion, etc. The human brain, apart from the simple nervous systems of some worms, is the most researched brain of all creatures.
