Diagnosis: Malaria pigment in the spleen
Description: Malaria pigment in the macrophages of the red pulp of the spleen.
Commentary: The Malarial pigment Hemozoin is an iron free product of hemoglobin deconstruction of the metabolism of the intraerythrocyically developing parasite. Pigment, that we find it in the infected red blood cells (erythrocytes), and that is released upon shizont rupture, is absorbed by the macrophages of malaria-infected hosts. After absorption into the macrophages hemozoin persists inside the lysosomes and is not disasembled further.
