Haemodialysis is the removal of liquid and dissolved molecules from blood, that is circulating extracorporeally, via filtration systems that contain semi-permeabel membranes. Haemodialysis is a so called Die Hämodialyse ist ein so genanntes renal replacment therapy.
Working principle
The most important element of haemodialysis is the so called dialyser. In it, the blood is pumped through a system of fine plastic capillaries which are surrounded by dialysis liquid. While moving through the capillaries, the blood loses small molecules along the concentration gradient through pores in the capillary wall, which dissolve in the rinsing fluid and are so removed from the blood. Blood vells and plasma proteins are retained in the blood plasma.
To ensure a sufficient blood flux during haemodialysis, a so called dialysis shunt is inserted for the patient.
