The contact with the tentacles leaves red welts on the skin that can remind you of a whiplash. Exposures should never be washed with vinegar or fresh water, but only with salt water. The remains of the tentacles can sting even later. Hot water above 45° C (318 K) can denature the proteins of the venom.
