Striated bands in a transverse ridge (in which kinetodesmal fibers are lacking) at high magnification. The longer band has seven stripes rather than five as in the shorter band. This suggests three regions of overlap rather than two. The filaments may have a set length so that for longer distances two sets of overlapping filaments may be needed to span the distance between the filaments arising from the epiplasm. TEM taken on 2/21/69 by R. Allen with Philips 300 operating at 60kV. Neg. 47,100X.
Biological Process: Cortical cytoskeleton organization
Standard glutaraldehyde fixation followed by osmium tetroxide, dehydrated in alcohol and embedded in an epoxy resin. Microtome sections prepared at approximately 75nm thickness. The raw negative was scanned with an Epson Perfection V750 Pro and this high resolution image is best used for quantitative analysis.
