The non- keratinized stratified squamous epithelium is replaced by a single-layered columnar epithelium. This change of epithelium is called metaplasia in pathology.
The metaplasic epithelium contains, similar to the epithelium in the colon, goblet cells. In contrast to the epithelium in the stomach, the apocrine glands are missing.
