Malignant Ascites

Malignant AscitesMalignant ascites in lower abdomen, fibrin strands, septated.The cause of ascites is the emanation of fluid from the vessels into the abdominal cavity.

Types of ascites:

non inflammatory ascites: Transudate caused by portal hypertension (e.g. in liver cirrhosis), heart failure, low colloid osmotic pressure (hypoalbuminaemia, nephrotic syndrome), exudative enteropathy, stomach cancer, colon cancer, peritoneal cancer

inflammatory ascites: exudate

hemorrhagic ascites: tuberculous peritonitis, peritoneal carcinomatosis, vessel rupture (blood leakage into abdominal cavity)

chylous ascites: Effusion of lymphatic fluid due to obstruction in thoracic duct
