Fungi of the genus candida affiliate with the yeast fungi and are regarded as facultative pathogens. Candida albicans may also be detected in the gastrointastinal system, pharynx , and vagina, of parts of the heathy population.
Candidiasis occurs when the immune system is weakened. Furthermore, in patients with leukemia candida infections with other strains frequently occur, including Candida glabrata, Candida krusei, and Candida tropicalis. In total, more than 150 Candida-species are known.
