Chromosome and DNA
A chromosome (greek: chromos = color and soma = body, therefore: dyable corpuscule) is a long, continuous strand of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) that is wrapped around a large amount of histones (nuclear proteins) as a double helix and repeatedly helically coiled to a compact form. It becomes visible during the cell division of an eucaryotic cell and contains a lot of genes. The deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is a very large molecule that stores the genetic information. According to this information, that is inscripted in the DNA as a specific form, the genetic code, proteins are produced. The macromolecule consists of the chemical elements carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, phosphor, and nitrogen.
