Telomerase
The telomerase is a cellular reverse transcriptase that consists of RNA and proteins. The RNA contains a sequence that can form base pairs with the telomere repetitions at the ends of the DNA strands. It also serves as a wandering template for the synthesis of telomere sequences (5'-TTAGGG-3') at the ends of the chromosomes. Thanks to this mechanism, the inevitable decrease in lenght of the telomere is slowed down, which delays the aging processes of the cell and protects it against DNA damage, which again plays a central role in cancerogenesis.
