The illustration shows the epidermis. It’s the outer, keratinizing epithelial layer of the skin (Integumentum commune) that is free of vessels and nerves. The epidermis is composed of stratified layers of flattened cells, that can be structured in the following parts: cornified layer (stratum corneum), translucent layer (stratum lucidum), granular layer stratum granulosum), spinous layer (stratum spinosum), and basal layer (stratum basale). It protects the body from external influences.
