This graphic illustrates the funtion of venous valves that are meant to prevent retrograde blood flow.
On the left side the blood streams towards the heart (in the right direction) and passes the opened valves.
If blood flow is reversed (right picture) the valves close and prevent retrograde blood flow.
If the valves become insufficient varicosis is the result.
