This is the structure of a myelinated nerve fiber: In myelinated nerve fiber only one axon enters a Schwann-cell. The resulting mesaxon develops around the axon. Numerous layers of the mesaxon, the cytoplasmic membrane of the Schwann-cell, surround the axon, merge and form the myelin sheath.
