Multiple sclerosis is a disease that affects the myelin sheaths of the central nervous system.
Etiology: The exact reason hasn`t been found yet, but there are various hypotheses, like genetic disposition, autoimmune disease and infections.
Sypmtoms (among others): Retrobulbar neuritis, paresthesias, Lhermitte syndrome, pareses, dysphagy, ataxy, dysarthry, ...
Course: Relapsing-remitting or primary progressive
Diagnosis: MRT (disseminized spots with sclerosis), liquor diagnostics (lymphocytic pleocytosis, oligoclonal bands), increased latency in an EVP
Therapy: Relapse therapy with glucocorticoids or plasmapheresis, immune modulating / immune suppressive therapy e.g. with Beta interferon or Glatiramiracetat + symptomatic therapy (ergotherapy, logopedics, complications prophylaxis ...)
