Tetanus is a disease that is caused by Clostridium tetani after wound infection. The bacteria produce a toxin that causes spastic paralysis of the muscles.
Often described is the characteristic trismus (locked jaw/lockjaw) which is a hightened tone of the muscles of mastication which means only limited opening of the mouth is possible.
