This illustration shows the areas that are affected by migraines. Migraine is an attack of episodically occurring chronic headaches. The knowledge about the causes and development od migraine are imcoplete at this point (2005). There are hypothethes that still need validation and expansion.
As an increase of migraines has been observed in industiralized countries in the last decades, environmental factors seem to play a role.
One idea is that serotonin release mediates migraine development. Starting point is the release of serotonin from the axons in the dura or from thrombocytes.
