Fishbone in the pharynx
The pharynx is the part of the throat situated dorsal of the oral and nasal cavity. It is the common aerodigestive tract, stretching from the base of the scull to the esophagus and trachea. It is a muscular tube of 12-15 cm.
The pharynx is the origin of multiple diseases. Besides tumors of the epithelium and congenital diverticula, the pharynx is the possible gateway for all kinds of germs, especially for infectious diseases. There are, more or less harmless and common diseases like pharyngitis and angina tonsillaris but also obstructive diseases like diphtheria. The latter can lead to asphyxia.
