His research founded chemotherapy, and was the first to develop a drug treatment for syphilis. He was also involved in the development of the serum against diphtheria. In 1908 he received, together with Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov, the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for founding immunology.
