Multiple sclerosis is a disease of the brain and spinal marrow (CNS) caused by an increasing damage of the outward envelope of nerve cells. This causes a decrease of neuronal functions, which can cause a multitude of symptoms. The reason for MS is unknown.
The disease is manifested by repaeating attacks on the nervous tissue in all areas of the central nervous system (brain and spinal marrow). The episodes occur when the body`s own immune system attacks the nervous system. The location of the inflammated areas varies from person to person and episode to episode. The inflammation destroys the cover of the nerve cells (myelin sheath) in this area, so that various areas are left as scar tissue (slerosis).
MS is chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS) that destroys the myelin sheaths (lilac) that surround the nerve fibers (green).
