Patient with a patient-controlled analgesia device to individually regulate the intake of pain medication. The PCA pump is a small device with a thin conduit that`s either connected to the subcutaneous fat tissue by a small needle, or to a small connection tube near the spinal marrow. The pump slowly and continually releases analgetics, which were selected by responsible doctor, into the attached system. Most devices contain an additional reservoir, so that an additional dose can be delivered in a case of increasing pain. But they also include a blockage that makes an overdose impossible, so that the analgetics can be adequately dosed by the patient even at home.
