The Heimlich maneuver is a first aid measure in case of suffocation by an external body (e.g. while eating). Execution: The help embraces the standing or sitting patient from the back. The hands are interlaced underneath the sternum in the so-called epigastrium. The help pushes forcefully once or many times towards the diaphragm. Pushing the diaphragm upwards, intrathoracic pressure increases, so that foreign bodies in the trachea or bronchi are emitted in the best case.
