Risus sardonicus the spasm face that takes place in tetanus, a disease of the nervous system that is caused by bacteria. The infection takes place by the invasion of Clostridium tetani in open wounds or cuts. The bacteria multiply and release toxins (tetanospasmine) that reaches the brain through blood or peripheral nerves. It inhibits muscle relaxing synapses which causes paralysis and spasms.
