Somits form during the embryonal segmentation in the trunk area out of the mesoderm next to the neural tube and the dorsal chord. Skin forms out of the dorsolateral part. This arrangement is called a dermatome. Due to this segmental origin of each main area, there is a segmental correlation to respective spinal nerve.
