Humans and air-breathing verterbates have lungs (lat. pulmo): A pair of organs needed for respiration. The left human lung consists of two, the right one of three lobes. The breathing air is conducted to the bronchial system, which begins with the trachea that splits up into two main (principial) bronchi, which keep on splitting up until the alveoles, which is where the gas exchange takes place.
