Schematic of the biosynthesis of steroid hormones.
In humans, steroid hormones are mostly produced in the cortex of the adrenal glands, in the gonads and in the CNS. As they are hydrophobic, they are transported inside the bloos while bound to transport proteins.
The origin of all steroid hormones is cholesterol.
