The ileum is like the entire small intestine involved with the absorption of ingested substances. It is mainly responsible for digestive ingredients that could not be absorbed in the previous jejunum. In its distal portions bile acids and cobalamin are absorbed from the lumen. The pH of the ileum is in neutral to slightly alkaline range (pH 7-8).
